[22:20] <`Doc> Agaven: The Lodestone is more crowded than you've seen it in years, and you've dropped by here more than a few times to ease your mind. Terranos lizardmen have taken two tables nearest the bar, and all sorts of people have occupied just about every table. Wherever you sit, you'll have company. [22:21] * Agaven looks for one of the quieter tables [22:22] <`Doc> Gil/Marigold: Pair looks hungrily at the food, and reaches to cut herself a slice of ham. "Mmm, delishus." She seems to be getting her strength back after that last dance. [22:22] * Marigold nibbles on bits of chicken and sticks the occasional piece in a sackon her shoulder [22:24] <`Doc> Marigold's bag rustles. [22:25] <`Doc> Agaven: There's a couple small tables on the far right of the room where people seem either less drunk, or so drunk they've fallen asleep. [22:26] * Agaven takes a seat at one of the less drunk peoples tables [22:27] * Gil arranges a small variety of meats and other offerings on his plate, before producing a fork and spoon and smiling over at the large feline. "So... what's in the bag?" [22:27] "tiger." [22:28] * Gil laughs. "One small tiger, to be sure - unless they drew them to scale in that book." [22:28] <`Doc> "Tiger? In there?" Kerjak looks at Marigold with a smug look on his face. [22:28] I don't know, she is a good size. [22:29] <`Doc> Agaven: The person seated across from you looks up briefly, then lets his head drop again, "I'm not interested." [22:29] * Agaven frowns, "I'm not offering." [22:30] <`Doc> Agaven: "Then find your own table." [22:30] * Marigold folds the flap back "Say hi to the nice people, Tiger." [22:30] * Gil smiles, and begins to speak between bites of food. "Well, at least she'll be getting a good meal, whatever she is." [22:30] <`Doc> Agaven: A semi-drunken voice behind you says, "Ye kin sith over hair, doc." [22:31] <`Doc> A cat pops its head out of Marigold's bag, and looks around briefly, before hopping up onto the table. It lets out a soft, "mew". [22:31] * Agaven gets up and quickly flashes a coin in front of the man, then smiles at the drunken man to sit over with him, "Thank you." [22:33] <`Doc> The disgruntled man ignores you, but the drunk seems to notice the coin, "Now, dock, it ain't right fer th'ladsy to bye the firs' roun'." He sets a coin on the table, with a small hole poked right through the middle. [22:33] <`Doc> <> [22:33] * Gil looks at the cat in mild surprise. "Well that's the second time today I've seen someone say something by hopping on a table. No offense, little friend, but I liked the first one more." [22:33] * Marigold takes a peice of ham and cuts it in two, then nibbles on one of the pieces. [22:34] <`Doc> Pair giggles, and reaches across the table to pet the cat, "I thenk it's kyoot." [22:35] * Marigold smiles [22:35] * Agaven places her coin down on the table, too, and winks, "A gentlemen at last." [22:36] <`Doc> Tiger brushes his head against Pair's hand, and purrs. After a few strokes, Pair settles back into her seat to eat more. [22:36] * Gil nods. "Indeed it is, indeed it is." He takes a sip of his tea once more, and lightly scratches the cat's back himself. [22:37] "Just not quite the same, y'know?" He grins. [22:37] <`Doc> Agaven: He reaches over to pool the two coins to gether, scoops them up, and tips them into your palm, "Hold ont' those, lass. Y'nev'r knows when ye'll needs 'em." [22:38] * Marigold strokes Tiger's back [22:38] * Agaven nods, and studys the man's face [22:38] <`Doc> Tiger seems to really enjoy the attention. [22:39] <`Doc> Agaven: The man's face seems ordinary. He has a bewhiskered face, tired eyes, and unimposing features. [22:39] * Gil looks over at Marigold again. "So, what brings you and your friend here? The performance, the hospitality...?" He trails his question off, implying alternatives. [22:40] Needed somewhere to wait until a patrol can take me across the city and I was impressed with the performance so decided to come meet the performer. [22:41] <`Doc> "You're not a local, are ya?" Kerjak asks, before stuffing a bite of bread into his mouth. [22:41] * Gil looks surprised. "You need a patrol to cross the city? I knew it was military, but that seems a bit harsh." [22:41] * Agaven pockets the coins, then raises an eyebrow at the man [22:42] No, I prefer to be out of cities, but sometimes I have to come to them. [22:43] <`Doc> "If she needs a patrol, it's for the south side of town," Kerjak answers Gil's comment, "bit of a rough spot if you look out of place." [22:43] <`Doc> Kerjak takes a closer look at Marigold. [22:43] "Yeah, it is towards the south side of town." [22:44] * Gil shakes his head. "No wonder there's bandits on the road, if they're having trouble with their own streets." [22:44] <`Doc> Kerjak smirks, "Walking south with that bawble around yer neck? Seems like the wrong way to go." [22:44] <`Doc> <> [22:45] dieroll d20+5 [22:45] * Diceaholic --> "Gil rolls a d20+5 and gets 13." [22:46] <`Doc> Gil: The pearl necklace around Marigold's neck could buy most of the stuff that was stolen from you. [22:46] Well unless you know of a better place to sell it, I need to get to a pawn shop down that way. [22:46] * Gil 's jaw drops. [22:46] <`Doc> "That depends what ya need the money for," Kerjak shrugs. [22:47] "Pawn shop?!" [22:47] I need the money to hire some people. [22:47] <`Doc> "Mercenaries?" [22:48] "Well it seemed better than mimes for the job." marigold grins back at the man. [22:48] "No offense, but no pawn shop in existence will give you what that's worth. It might put them out of business just thinking about it." [22:49] <`Doc> "I wouldn't go that far," Kerjak answers with a glance at Gil, "though yeah, most pawn shops won't give you what that's worth. Now, if you want to hire mercenaries..." [22:50] Yes I do, I need them to help me hunt some goblins, or at least run them out of the forest." [22:50] * Agaven smiles at the man, "So it would seem I'm going on a bit of a holiday, or something..." [22:51] <`Doc> Agaven: "Oh? Got a vacation spot in mind?" [22:51] "I'm not sure; would you have a suggestion?" [22:52] <`Doc> Kerjak nods, and continues, "In that case, hang around here for a bit. I'll walk you into the guildhouse, and we'll get the whole thing sorted out." [22:53] * Marigold smiles happily "Oh would you! I'd be very grateful if you would." [22:53] <`Doc> "Out of curiosity, how many goblins you talking?" [22:54] * Gil shakes his head slowly. "If I may make a suggestion, it's that you wait to hear their price and then come with me to the trading grounds. I can't with good conscience let you pawn that thing off, just to see it go to my competitors and have you cheated out of gold." [22:55] <`Doc> Agaven: "Well, I was thinking of heading out east, but nothing really solid yet." [22:55] Quite a few, I think it was around thirtyish. [22:55] <`Doc> Kerjak whistles, "Well, I'd say you'll get your money's worth." [22:56] "East suits, but oh yes?" [22:56] They said I could pay them by the head instead of a flat rate. [22:57] <`Doc> "I wouldn't go that way. Some of those boys have a tendency to throw off your count if you don't watch 'em." [22:57] <`Doc> <> [22:57] * Gil chuckles. "Double-billing. Scourge of traders and fair-merchants everywhere." [22:58] YOu think they would find extra golbin heads somewhere? [22:58] <`Doc> Kerjak shrugs, "Y'know, if you don't mind staying the night, I might be able to talk my compatriots into taking the job. They're straight shooters as guildies go, and every bit worth their salt." [22:59] <`Doc> "You did say about running them off," Kerjak adds. [22:59] Yes, but if they kill extra goblins I can't say as I would mind any. Just so long as they leave the woods. [23:01] <`Doc> Kerjak chuckles, "You definitely need someone to negotiate for you. If ol' Jovas got you to sign a contract with the offer you made, they'd've run off more goblins than the camp had." [23:01] * Gil sips his tea again, and sighs. "Mercenaries guild... I don't suppose you keep good work-logs for trade-caravans? I may have some bad news for you to enter in to your records, and I could use some information from you as well." [23:02] <`Doc> "That depends which mercenary guild you used. The guild here has to keep tight tabs or the bureaucrats'll hound us. Other places aren't so careful." [23:03] <`Doc> Agaven: The stranger flags the waitress over. She takes a minute to arrive, and looks exhausted. "Yes luv, what can I get ya?" [23:04] * Gil sighs. "Well, I might as well check. If nothing else, you can't be MORE unhelpful than the city clerks are." He looks over at Marigold. "And, if you wouldn't mind, I'd like to give you a bit of help yourself. Straight from the mercenary's mouth, there - you want to make sure they don't cheat you on your billing." [23:05] * Marigold nods and looks slightly confused [23:05] "And if nothing else, I can do a contract. It's the second job of the trader, carrying other peoples' goods." [23:06] <`Doc> Pair, who has been eating quietly, reaches across the table, handing Gil's flask back to him. "Thank you, it was vary kind." [23:07] * Agaven peers at the stranger, then wonders what to get to drink [23:07] * Gil smiles over at Pair, and reaches into his belongings to retrieve her purse. "Always willing to show off the local brew. Here's your purse, as well." [23:07] <`Doc> "Thank you for holding that for me," Pair smiles happily, accepting her purse. [23:08] * Marigold eats quietly and hands bits of ham to tiger [23:08] * Gil trades it for the waiting flask. "No problem whatsoever for someone who's handling my room and board for the night. It's the least of my debt, given my present situation." [23:09] <`Doc> Tiger keeps eating merrily, though she occasionally helps herself to scraps from the table as well. [23:10] <`Doc> Agaven: The stranger looks up at the waitress, "A mead for me, and some bread if you could." His eyes settle back on you. [23:11] "Hmm, ale for me" [23:12] <`Doc> Agaven: The waitress nods, and hustles off. [23:14] * Gil looks to Marigold. "So, what's with the goblins anyways? Uncomfortably-close to home?" [23:15] They are destructive to the forests. [23:15] <`Doc> Everyone: There's a crash in the middle of the room. One of the less sober patrons has landed on his back. A few people nearby laugh, and help him back up. [23:16] "This place is warming up it seems.." [23:16] * Gil sips his tea again. "But you're paying to have them removed... is it your forest?" [23:17] All forests are my forest. [23:17] <`Doc> Agaven: "Been that way since the bard started up. You should've heard her playing earlier. It was.. well, I can't describe it." [23:17] <`Doc> Kerjak chuckles, "You really *are* rich, lady." [23:18] * Gil laughs. "Can't argue with that, I suppose. That may just take more than the necklace, though." [23:18] <`Doc> Kerjak may be a bit drunk. He starts chuckling to himself. [23:18] * Marigold giggles [23:18] Not rich, just feel responsible. [23:19] <`Doc> "Well, if ya own the whole forest..." [23:20] People can't own a forest, it will outlast them and their children. [23:21] <`Doc> Kerjak grins, "Well, if you don't own it, then you ain't responsible, the goblins are. After all, unlike money, trees *do* grow on trees." [23:21] Money doesn't matter though, the trees do. [23:22] A good performance, then? [23:22] * Gil chuckles, and looks at Kerjak. "No use joking with the druid about the forests. It's like joking with the forest itself - you're not going to get anywhere." [23:22] <`Doc> Agaven: "Like you wouldn't believe." [23:23] <`Doc> Pair giggles. [23:25] <`Doc> "Oh!" Pair squeaks, "I just remembered something. Please excuse me a moment." She gets up, and walks across the room towards the lizardmen. [23:25] "I'm more wondering how you managed to run into a goblin tribe in one single forest, given that whole 'all of them' thing." [23:26] "I'm sorry I missed it..." [23:27] Well this one is near where I was born, and I can't let them stay in the woods. I also can't get rid of them alone. [23:28] <`Doc> Kerjak chuckles, "If you could get rid of thirty goblins alone, mercenaries would be hiring *you*." [23:28] * Gil laughs. [23:28] * Marigold nods and pushes her plate aside [23:29] <`Doc> Tiger hops onto Marigold's lap, and curls up. [23:30] * Marigold strokes tiger softly [23:32] * Gil drinks the rest of his tea, and slides another small batch of food onto his plate. "Personally, I could use a mercenary who could trail well-worn roads. Not to mention read minds, and work for free. And, while I may find the first two, I'll never see the third." [23:32] <`Doc> "Wouldn't be a mercenary if you didn't pay them," Kerjak points out. [23:33] * Gil grins. "My point." [23:33] Wouldn't a mind reading mercenary be very expensive? [23:34] * Gil shrugs. "If they even exist. Let's just say I hold little hope of ever seeing my shipment again... such a shame, too - those were some great works of gnomish craft in there, and I'd even included a few small items." [23:35] <`Doc> Agaven: After a moment, the waitress comes back with two mugs and a small basket of bread rolls, "S'all I got fer bread on short notice." She places the mugs in front of you and the person across from you, then hurries off again to answer another table. [23:36] Keep looking, maybe you'll get lucky and find one. [23:37] * Agaven takes a sip of ale, "Now then.." [23:38] <`Doc> Agaven: "Then and now are mutually exclusive, you know." He sounds a lot less drunk than before. [23:38] * Agaven points to the mans' mead [23:39] * Gil sighs. "Right now, I'm hoping those bandits just get caught in a military patrol sometime, before they pass off my stuff to the less-reputable resellers. I don't have the funds to hire anyone to get it back, being as that *was* my plan for earning some." [23:39] <`Doc> Agaven: The man looks down at his mead, then at your hand, then back up at your face. [23:39] I believe you and I have something to talk about, over a drink. [23:40] "As is, I owe my night's lodging to the talented lady with the lute." He grins. [23:42] <`Doc> Kerjak looks over at the empty seat, then at Gil, "I wonder how long she's in town for." [23:42] * Marigold looks around for something to drink [23:43] * Agaven smiles at the man [23:43] <`Doc> <> [23:43] * Gil smiles. "I have honestly no idea. But I'm hoping that, by the time she's off, I'll have enough to at least buy my way onto another caravan back. If not enough to come back with some profit." [23:44] <`Doc> <> [23:44] <> [23:44] <> [23:45] * Marigold sips her ale and smiles [23:45] "I may be down, but I'm not out yet. There's still people in this town, and thus a chance to make some money." [23:46] <`Doc> Agaven: The stranger takes a sip from his glass. "I suppose we have. As I understand it, you're looking for a travelling partner?" [23:47] Well I hope you manage to make the money you need. [23:48] * Gil nods. "Let's hope most people in this town is more like here, and less like that infernal claims office." [23:48] <`Doc> Marigold's cat gets up, and climbs into her bag. [23:48] *are [23:48] * Marigold folds the flap back over the bag but doesn't secure it [23:50] <`Doc> A few of the patrons begin filtering out of the establishment, having eaten their fills and (probably) settled their bills. [23:50] "Indeed sir...would you be the one to fit that bill?" [23:51] <`Doc> Agaven: "Well, I do have hopes to travel, if that's what you mean." [23:51] * Gil finishes off his second plateful (always eat your fill when the food is free), then sits back and pulls out his pipe. "At least I still have this with me." [23:53] He fills his pipe with tobacco, then looks between the remaining two table-occupants. "Either of you have some flint to spare?" [23:54] <`Doc> Kerjak fishes around in his pocket for a moment, then holds out his flint. [23:54] "hmmmm...something along those lines" [23:55] * Gil grins. "Much obliged." He takes it, and tries to light his pipe. [23:55] <`Doc> Agaven: "It'd be a shame to walk out just us two, though. There's safety in numbers." [23:56] <`Doc> Gil: After a few tries, the sparks catch. [23:57] "Someone else to catch the blades of bandits" [23:57] * Agaven smirks [23:57] <`Doc> Agaven: "Hopefully it won't come to that." [23:57] "though I'd have to fix them afterwards..." [23:57] * Gil puffs his pipe with no small satisfaction, then hands the flint back to Kerjak with a smile. "This day, not to mention this night, very much has earned a smoke." [23:57] * Agaven agrees [23:58] <`Doc> Agaven: The man smirks, "Actually, that's kinda what I had in mind. Figure we could hitch along with some group headed out, you being a doctor and all." [23:58] * Marigold traces a claw lightly on the table [00:00] "Any candidates in mind?" [00:01] <`Doc> Agaven: "That's why we're here. Mercenary guild across the way, and a nice crowd in here. There've gotta be a few travellers around who'd enjoy the company. You'll have to do the asking, though." [00:02] "Thus be so...hmmm.."
